Although one shouldn't judge a restaurant on its specials, the specials are excellent choices. This cozy little restaurant provides delicious gourmet comfort food. Don't expect to eat and have room
for dessert and be ready to chow down somewhere else. The dinners are substantial.
True Kansas City style sauce is never sweet. Gates has a strong black pepper tang, Bryant's is gritty with paprika and has the heat of cayenne pepper. I like both of these sauces but Mr. Harris had
the best blend. His sauce was tomato rich, had a vinegar tang and a pepper bite but was smooth and surprisingly delicate. Too bad, Mr. Harris died in the mid Seventies and took his sauce with
Tuck Shop's principal selling point is their pies; meat pies, "chook pies" (chicken, ham, leeks in white gravy), lamb shanks in slow
and vege pie, vegetable pie, Thai green chook curry pie, and the Guinness steak and mushroom pie, as their principal foods. They also have daily specials, rolls, sangers (sandwiches)
salads, sides, and dessert. Moreover they serve breakfast at Tuck Shop, "the Aussie way with locally raised/organic eggs." While I hope there are no egg farms in the East Village, I might not put it
past neighboring Chinatown.
This lamb curry can be served as a side dish or as a main meal. A side dish of brown and wild rice will yield a complete protein, when combined with the beans in the curry. A favorite of mine is to
eat it with soft, warm Naan bread.

It would be best to utilize genuine spices instead of going for easy to prepare, commercially available curry powder or paste. This way you will end up cooking a curry dish that curried lamb is

The food is traditional Indian food, and from the first mouthful, I was hooked on the food. It is not overly hot, or spicy, but you will need plenty of water with it. We were brought up in England,
with Indian lamb curry stew
, but if you are not used to the cuisine, then you may find it hot.
The market and grill prices an entire rotisserie chicken at only $5.25. Beat that HEB! Stuffed grape leaves (dolmas) are $.65 each. Spinach or Feta Pies are less than $1 and a chicken roll is $1.25.
